Running a car is expensive, people often do not give much thought to maintenance of their vehicles until things start going wrong and are then shocked at their repair bills. Even more so when they realise if they had kept up with their annual services and fluid checks etc then they may not have ended up with their current repair bill.
The role of a mechanic is a highly skilled one, think about all the systems and components a mechanic has to learn, then add the responsibility that comes with their jobs, this is mainly what your paying a mechanic for and Many jobs that require fixing on your vehicle will need a trained and qualified mechanic, but her at Mobitech We do understand that times are tough, but ignoring your vehicles needs is a false economy thats why Mobitech has produced some helpful Tips that you can POTENTIALLY do yourself to help with your costs.
How to check your oil levels.
While there are lots of jobs that are best left to the professional, but there’s jobs you can do yourselves to keep your vehicles running at their best.
This video will help you learn how to check their oil levels and why it’s so important.
Engine oil lubricates your engine's moving parts, this reduces the damage that friction can cause, the lack of oil will also reduce your vehicles performance.
Driving with low oil levels can significantly reduce the life of the parts in your engine. Clean oil also prevents the buildup of sludge which can clog oil pipes and passages in your engine.
If you wait long enough without an oil change it could eventually cost you, your cars engine. Once oil becomes sludge, it will no longer draw heat from the engine, this is bad as it could mean that your engine overheats and either blow a gasket or seize up.
One of the first warning signs is, the sight of white exhaust fumes from your exhaust pipe, this could be a sign of a blown head gasket.
One major issue is that the increased friction can wear away the surfaces of the engine’s moving parts such as the oil pump, This excessive wear can lead to your engine’s mechanical failure, which leads to very costly major repairs or even a complete engine replacement and the decision to scrap because its not economical or to replace.
The small cost of keeping on top of your oil top ups and changes could literally save your vehicle from the scrap yard and save you a lot of Money.
Tests were done by a UK leading technical organisation the MIRA found that cars that tyres are below 3mm tread, could scrap the taught stopping distances because the tread dramatically increased the stopping distances when braking.
They found the difference for braking in the wet between a tyre worn to 3mm and one worn to 1.6mm can be as much as 44% Different!
Think about your tyres as your last form of defence when protecting you, your passengers and other road users from harm, as your tyres are the only contact between your vehicle and the road. If your tyres are compromised in any way, they can dramatically affect your ability to stop in time and not have a blow out.
currently the Uk law says your Tyre must have a minimum tread depth of 1.6mm to be road legal, the legal minimum is what is considered sufficient to guarantee safety – BUT most recommend a minimum tread depth of 3mm for tyre and that’s the advisory time to replace.
Different road conditions produce different stoppage times, this is even more so highlighted with Worn tyres. Wet roads and worn tyres are particularly dangerous.
This is because a tyre’s tread helps disperse water away from the contact rubber, between tyre and road. So, the rule is, if there is less tread depth (under 3mm), your tyre cannot displace as much water, this then increases the risk of aquaplaning and losing grip.
Did you know? In heavy rain, each tyre has the potential of shifting 1gallon of water every second you're driving. So, as you can see the deeper your tyre tread is the more water that can be dispersed, meaning they can work better at improving your vehicle’s grip to the road.
If your tyres are past their best, then the safety of your vehicle will be compromised.
Driving a car with bald tyres can risk a fine of £2,500 per Tyre and three penalty points, not to mention the risk to you, your passengers and other road user's lives.
Mobitech has made this video that shows you hits and tips on how to replace your wiper blades yourself. Hopefully keeping you safe and legal while saving some money.
Your Windscreen wipers are a particularly important and legal requirement of your vehicle. They simply aid in wiping away debris, rain, snow, and more so you can see where you are going when driving (kind of important!)
Without these wipers, driving would be nearly impossible in lots of weather conditions. This is definitely one of the easiest jobs you can do yourself.
Wiper blades should be replaced roughly every 12 months.
However, colder months may speed this requirement up and they will need replacing sooner due to things like frost damage or simply using them more.
Every vehicle fitted with a windscreen must have one or more efficient automatic windscreen wipers unless the driver can obtain an adequate view of the road to the front without looking through the windscreen.
Every vehicle is required to have a windscreen wiper must also have a windscreen washer,
Just as important as your wiper blades is your screen washers.
You might not have realised that it’s Illegal to drive without screen wash. Why? its simple, when you drive, dirt, grit and bugs can build up on the windscreen and obscure your vision, or rain and snow can obscure your vision, particularly during the winter when conditions are bad.
DID YOU KNOW?
If your wipers don’t adequately clear the windscreen so that you can see the road ahead of you, you could be stopped and fined for careless driving!
The consequence for failure to have properly working windscreen wipers could lead to dangerous driving scenarios, which incurs a £2,500 fine and three penalty points! If you’re found to commit the offence (or one similar) twice within a three-year span from the original offence, then you may be disqualified from driving for a minimum of six months.
As part of the Road Vehicles Regulations, cars must be fitted with a windscreen washer capable of cleaning your windscreen at all times.
If you are caught with no washer fluid, you could be charged with careless driving, an offence where police have the power to issue an on-the-spot fixed penalty notice for £100 and three penalty points.
