A/C isn’t just a summer tool. If you use your A/C all year round, it helps defrosting your screen and keep it running well!
Our air-conditioning recharge and anti-bacterial cleaning
To maintain its full effectiveness, your car should have its air conditioning refreshed. Not only can drops in gas pressure prevent cooling air from entering your car, but a struggling system can also put more strain on your car’s engine, which causes you to use more fuel.
Clean filters are also an integral part of keeping your car’s air conditioning working and healthy, with bacteria building up in air conditioning filters over time through regular use.
If your air conditioning is blowing out musty smells, an anti-bacterial clean is recommended to help return your air-conditioning to normal, working order (and odour).
How Air Conditioning Works
There are several components that make your car’s air conditioning work. Refrigerant gas, also known as R134a or R1234yf, is compressed and then condensed within the system.
Your car features a condenser, compressor, accumulator, and evaporator among other components such as lines and feed systems to pressurise the liquid refrigerant to the correct state needed to provide your car
with cooling air.
Your air conditioning system recirculates the refrigerant creating a cycle of
consistently cool air.
How do I know which aircon gas I require?
At Mobitech mechanics we will ask for you car registration plate to which type of gas you require. vehicles manufactured before 2014 R134A gas is needed.
All vehicles with air conditioning manufactured since 1st January 2017 will need the new R1234YF air con gas which is more environmentally friendly.
Environmental fact: Since 1st January 2017, manufacturers are no longer allowed to use the older R134A air con gas in new vehicles, this is in a bid to reduce global warming as the old-style gas is believed to be more damaging to the environment.
R1234YF gas was phased in by vehicle manufacturers over time, so vehicles rolling off the production line between 2014 to 2016, will depend on the vehicle’s manufacture date to determine which type of gas your vehicle will require as vehicles between this date-range could have either gas’s.
If you are still not entirely sure which type of air conditioning gas your car needs, Mobitech can determine this by using your car registration to find which gas the make and model and age of your car uses.
Does my air con need recharging?
Manufacturers recommend that your aircon is recharged every 1-2 years, this can vary depending on how much you use your aircon system.
As most garages won’t check your cars air conditioning as part of your MOT test and regassing will not typically be included in any yearly Service, it is therefore important to make sure that you include aircon gas recharging as part of your regular vehicle maintenance routine.
If your AC is blowing out warm air or only works intermittently, an AC recharge can bring back cold air when you need it most on those hot days and can also improve your fuel efficiency as there is less strain on the system and engine. Unpleasant smells coming from the air vents could suggest that your air con needs some attention in the form of an aircon debug, otherwise known as, Air Conditioning Cleaning.
Air Conditioning Cleaning service
If there are bad odours coming from your air vents when you turn on your car A/C or maybe it smells damp? then your car may also benefit from an aircon clean, also known as a debug. Please note this is a separate service from a regassing and will incur a separate charge.

Got a damp smell?
If you get a build-up of bacteria and mould in your system, this usually causes the distinctive smell of mildew when you open on your air vents and turn on, you’re A/C.
This can happen to older cars that have had bacteria growing behind the dashboard for years and in cars that rarely run the air conditioning, as they aren’t benefiting from the drying effects of your A/C being regularly used. This will lead to excess water on the coils.
In the winter months we use our aircon systems to demist our cars, while looking forward to the promise of the warm spring and summer heat. But for those with faulty air conditioning systems, that drive home can quickly become hot and frustrating.
Being too hot in a car is unpleasant for everyone, even your pets.
So, just why is your car air conditioning system blowing out warm air?
The main culprits when it comes to identifying this particular problem are:
1. Low refrigerant levels
2. Damaged cooling fans or pipes
3. A blocked or broken condenser
4. An internal obstruction
5. An electrical fault
6. Cabin filter and compressor faults
Often, when an air conditioning unit is blowing out warm air, the underlying problem as to why your cars AC is not working will be identified by Mobitech diagnostic service and a suitable option will be offered to the fit the customers budget. Mobitech Mechanics will begin work until a quote has been drafted and approved by the customer.
While not being able to turn the air conditioning off is a problem, not being able to turn it on in the first place is arguably worse.
So, what should you do if your air conditioning won’t turn on?
Give Mobitech a call to discuss you’re a diagnostic, as even something as seemingly small as a slight increase in temperature while it’s running can indicate a bigger problem.
· On extremely hot days, an air conditioning system can overheat, and this can cause the fan to burn out.
· A broken dial can also affect your ability to switch the air conditioning on, as well as a broken switch, a stuck valve, a wiring fault, a blown fuse or an obstruction in the air ducts can also mean your aircon won’t turn on.
· Many car owners make the mistake of not running their air conditioning during the chilly winter months, as they don’t realise to benefits of using it in the winter.
· It could be a compressor issue, the majority of compressors won’t engage if the coolant level falls too low, so an easy way to diagnose if this is the problem is to see if you can hear the compressor kicking on and off.
· If the battery has been disconnected, it may be necessary to reset the electronics, as they are prone to going into an unintelligible condition after the battery has been detached.
Keep the windows shut
Air conditioning works similarly to your fridge or freezer at home; it removes heat and moisture and leaves you with the cool, crisp air that makes long drives on hot days bearable. Just like your fridge, however, you’ll need to seal in the cold air to make sure that the system works correctly, which means making sure that your car’s windows are shut while the air-conditioning is switched on.
Think of it like this, leaving the fridge door open, would you ever do it? And if you did the fridge temperature sensors will sound an alarm.
Not only do you lose out on the full effect of the air conditioner’s cooling effect with the window open, but you also run the risk of running down your air conditioning’s charge, as it’s having to work harder, meaning you’ll need to book your car in for a re-gas sooner. Don’t forget you’ll also get less fuel efficiency as your engine has to works harder to keep a consistent temperature in your vehicle.
Use air conditioning regularly
I hear your thinking, you’re ‘saving’ your air conditioning gas by not using it so often. Wrong!
Actually, leaving it for long periods of time can cause the gas to go ‘stale’ limiting its effectiveness. Fortunately, your car’s air conditioning can be useful all year round, as air conditioning is more effective for clearing mist from your windscreen than using the fans alone.
Let the fan run
While your air conditioning is running, moisture will build up in the filters, which eventually causes the bacteria which leads to bad smells coming from the vents. To help prevent this, turning off your car’s air-conditioning a few minutes before the end of your journey and running the fans can help remove the excess water that would otherwise be left in your car’s air conditioning filters.
Regular recharges & anti bacterial cleaning
Air conditioning recharges should be carried out on your car on average once every 1-2 years; these recharges help ensure that the gas in your car’s air-conditioning systems is at the correct level and provides the coolest air possible whenever you need it.
A generally bad smell can be emitted when the air filters get clogged up with dirt, dust and stagnant water and this odour can be repulsive enough to make drivers switch off their air conditioning altogether, rather than suffer through the smell.
If any of this sounds like you, we would Recommended booking a air con cleaning Service. This will rid your cars air conditioning system of any undesirable contaminants or musty smells.
generally, an Aircon re gas will take between 45 minutes to an hour depending on your vehicle.
